これは、私が制作した1989年のいとうせいこう "MESS/AGE" というアルバムからの「メッセージ」という楽曲です。オケはカリプソ・シンガー、マイティー・スパローのアルバムからサンプリングして作った作品です。当時（1988年）このアルバムを持っていたのは、私だけだったと思うんですけど、アハハ。ミュージックマガジンでカリプソの原稿を書いてた深沢さんは持ってなかったし、故中村とうようさんも持ってなかったと思います。でもまあ、コレクターの事も考慮すると日本では多めに見積もっても五人位いたのかも知れません。それで、このお話のポイントはそのことにあるのではなくて、曲の後奏部分でピコン、ピコンと唄ってるでしょ、そのピコンっていう事のお話なんです。

カリプソというのはリズムの名称ではなくて社会風刺歌の事なんです。皮肉たっぷりに面白可笑しく日常の時事ネタを唄って笑い飛ばすというもので、その風刺の度合いをピコンといいます。支配体制との闘いの中から生まれたもので、カリプソ発祥の地トリニダード・トバゴでは、カリプソシンガーは国を代表する頭脳委員会的な位置づけにあるのです。ですから普段は学校の教師だったりする人が、年に一度のカーニバル時にはカリプソニアンとなって活躍したりします。

"MESS/AGE" は、アルバムの冒頭部分と最後の楽曲にカリプソを持って来て、核が爆発した地球の事をテーマにしようとディレクションをして、いとうさんが歌詞を創っています。

まぶしいカビがただよう夕焼け　　くせになりそうだった　居心地良くて

これはその歌詞の抜粋ですが、アルバム"MESS/AGE" はそうしたことで、奥行きのあるアルバムとして上梓できたと自負しております。

それでまあ、こんどは、1992年と94年に、スティール・ドラム発祥の地でもあるトリニダード・トバコに渡って、私のソロ・アルバム "MUSIC FOR ASTRO AGE" と、ASTRO AGE STEEL ORCHESTRA 名義での "HAPPY LIVING" というアルバムを制作するのですが、それらのアルバムのキャストは、1983年に初めてトリニダードへ渡った際のリサーチで大方決めていました。

"HAPPY LIVINNG" の制作では、マイティー・スパローと並ぶ国民的ヒーローであるカリプソ・シンガー、ロード・キチナーの楽曲をカバーしています。それは "Hold On To Your Man" という1964年の作品で、「スティールバンドの奴らが町にやって来る、奴らに心を奪われないようにしっかりと抱きしめて...」といった内容のロードマーチです。キチナーは特にスティール・バンドの重要なレパートリーとなるロードマーチの名曲を数多く遺した音楽家で、国の宝として庶民に圧倒的な支持を得ていました。

当初、唄はキチナーにお願いするつもりでいたんですよ。当地のブッキング・マネージャーからは、「トミタ、キチナーは一曲◯ドル出せば来てくれるよ」と言われました。その提示した額というのは、おそらく、私にオファーを断念してもらう為の方策で、それからブッキングマネージャーとの橋渡しをしてくれた、現地在住の日本人の方の面目を保つ意味もあったのでしょう。でなければ単に私からのオファーをキチナー・サイドが断ればいいだけの話ですから。それに国の宝でもある我らがヒーロー、キチナーが参加するの？と、現地のスタッフから戸惑いのような空気も感じていました。

それで、その額は当地ではそうゆうスキャンダラスな驚くような額ではあるのですが、実は、当時は私のような者でもアルバム制作費としては潤沢にあったので、可能な額だったのです。ここでジャパン・マネーの威力をかってキチナーに唄ってもらえば、アルバムとしてはヒストリカルな作品になるのは判っていました。世界中にファンがいるのも知っていました。ただそれよりも、その額でお願いして演ってもらった場合、おそらく彼らはその事を、皮肉たっぷりに面白可笑しくカリプソにしてしまうだろうなと思ったのです。そのくらいの事は彼らカリプソニアンはするのです。めちゃくちゃ頭が良いですから。それでホテルにもどって一晩考えて頼むのをやめました。

『20年目のDOOPEE TIME』のためのEFFECT CATALOG (2015) から以下、一部転載：

5年ほど前のある日、インターネットで買い物をしていたら、このレコードのジャケットが目に飛び込んできて、びっくりして腰が抜けそうになりました。私が所有していた物は右上画像のもので、こんなジャケットのバージョンがあったなんて知りませんでした…。しかし、世の中的には「 ”DOOPEE TIME” のジャケットってこれを元にしたんだね」って言われてしまうのでしょうね…。トホホ。

私のこれまでに発表した作品のほとんどは、『必然性のある偶然』によってできているのですが、その反面、音楽の神様に試されているとしか思えないようなことも起こるのです。だからこれは、私に対する音楽の神様の15年ごろしっていうやつなのでしょう、きっと。しかもタイトルが『カリプソ・タイム』だし、ジャケットのスパローは手叩いて笑ってるし…。アハハ。『必然性のある偶然』といえば、今回寄稿して下さった水上徹さんは、「お勤め帰りに今回の原稿のことを考えながら電車に乗って座席についたら、正面に座ってる人がオーディオ・サイエンス・ラボのキャップをかぶっていて驚いた」と仰ってました。

　ジャケットのことは、冷静に考えてみれば、私は7～8歳の頃から目的意識を持ってレコードを買っていて、それをずっと続けてきたから、それまで見てきた沢山のレコード・ジャケットの中で目にしてきた可能性はあるかと思います。それが深層部分に刻まれていて「DOOPEE TIME」のジャケットになったのかも知れません。

マイティ・スパローの『メモリーズ』はとても好きな楽曲で、70年代の中頃によく聴いていました。今思うと当時は牧歌的で呑気な良い時代だったと思います。１億総中流と言われた日本のベストだったかと思います。今ではネット詐欺メールの処理から１日がスタートするなんて、なんてこったいです。この曲の終盤では、デスペラドス・スティール・オーケストラの当時のキャプテンであるルドルフ・チャールズについて歌われています。スパローが少年時代を過ごし、14歳でスティールバンドに参加したラベンティルの丘は、同楽団のパンヤード（練習場）がある場所でした。ルドルフ本人の葬儀の際には、スティール・ドラム（パン）で作られた特製の棺にその遺体が納められました。またデスペラドスのかってのダブル・セカンド・パン奏者デヴィッド・アッシュの葬儀では、スパローやルドルフの孫、ひ孫世代にあたる若手メンバーによって『メモリーズ』が演奏され胸が熱くなります。

ABOUT THE

AUDIO SCIENCE LABORATORY

The Audio Science Laboratory (A.S.L.) was established in 1989 with the theme of “expanding consciousness through music.” It is an independent, private research institute. Rather than being funded by academia or the government, it has been operated by a professional musician who used profits from his work to fund research, then applying the findings back to commercial music. It should also be noted that this has been made possible by the support of various collaborators.

The concept of “expanding consciousness” originates from the chemical compound LSD 25, synthesized in 1938 by Dr. Albert Hofmann, a scientist at the Swiss pharmaceutical company Sandoz. Until 1966, this chemical was a legal substance available as a therapeutic drug with a doctor’s prescription. Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), recognizing the potential of LSD-25, placed the drug under its control and conducted repeated experiments throughout the 1950s to test its possibilities. A wide range of studies were conducted, including gathering 100 painters and having them create artwork both while under the influence of LSD and while sober; reports that a single dose had the same effect on art students as four years of art school; experiments on Army units; its use as a truth serum; its administration to spies during the Cold War; and even “Operation Acid,” which targeted Egyptian President Nasser. In Japan, the documentary film “LSD Experiments” was produced in 1959 with the participation of Toshiki Shimazaki, a professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University and a psychiatrist. Additionally, during a live radio broadcast, experiments were conducted under Shimazaki’s supervision with poet Shuntaro Tanikawa and mime artist Mamako Yonemyama as subjects. However, because the dose administered via intravenous injection was too high, the subjects ended up simply sleeping through the broadcast. Toshiki Shimazaki, a relative of the novelist Tōson Shimazaki, brought a breath of fresh air to Japanese psychiatry.

By the 1960s, word of the drug’s effects began to spread gradually among experts; fueled by claims that “your consciousness expands and you become an amazing person,” it spread from the upper echelons of the bourgeoisie and politicians to university professors and artists. Ironically, when it was completely banned as an illegal substance in 1966, drug dealers stepped in, leading to an explosive surge in its use. This major movement of consciousness expansion came to be known as “psychedelia.” In Japan, following Toshiki Shimazaki’s experiments, it spread as “psychedelia” by 1968, and the trend of vividly colorful “psychedelia” made its way into living rooms through various media, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Shintaro Ishihara’s original novel “L·S·D” was published in the February issue of *Bungakukai*, and that same year, the Folk Crusaders’ “Kaette Kita Yoppara,” (The Drunkard Returns) an avant-garde song that made full use of tape modulation and collage techniques derived from electronic music, became the biggest postwar hit, selling 2.7 million copies.

I believe that LSD 25 was not originally intended for the pursuit of pleasure, but rather stemmed purely from an exploration of the question: “Just how far can human potential actually go?”

The Audio Science Laboratory does not endorse drug use—and I, for one, am a boring guy who doesn’t touch alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs at all—but we have operated under the theme of whether it is possible to expand consciousness purely through music. I am proud to say that the program “Yann Tomita’s World of Music—In Search of Expanded Consciousness Through Music” (90 minutes), which aired on NHK BS (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) on September 10 and November 23, 2013, represents a tangible achievement in this endeavor. A sequel is also planned, so I hope you’ll have the chance to watch it someday.
